What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is an essential mineral that is important for varying systems of the body such as, the muscular system, nervous system, heart function, skeletal system and I would venture to add its aid in proper gut health. As a family, we've seen drastic improvement in all of these areas since we started supplementing magnesium on a regular basis, both topically and though oral consumption.
Benefits of Magnesium
The benefits of magnesium can be seen in healthy blood pressure, strengthening bones, maintaining a steady heart rhythm, decreasing inflammation, asthma attack aid, relieving anxiety and depression, migraines, general fatigue and sore muscles and joints.
Reasons the Body Can be Deficient in Magnesium
There are a myriad of reasons that the body can be depleted of magnesium. Reasons I personally know of include mold exposure, unbalanced gut flora (after illness, antibiotics or poor diet patterns), chronic illnesses, heavy metal poisoning, parasites, pregnancy and/or miscarriage. There are certainly more reasons and scientific explanations of the ways that magnesium works in the body. However, I would encourage you to look deeper into this yourself.

Ways to Increase Magnesium Intake
Not all magnesium is created equal and different kinds are used for different purposes. There have been several brands in the last 5 years or so that have become very popular for their tastiness and accessibility. Though those types of magnesium are helpful for overall mood and sleep aid, they can hardly reach a deeper level of healing in individuals with chronic or severe deficiencies.
You can increase magnesium intake at home by taking it orally in a supplement form or by using magnesium-infused skin products. At the end of this post, I will share a few recipes we use often use in our home! Magnesium is said to be best absorbed through the skin organ.

For severe magnesium depletion, many health practitioners also offer magnesium infusions through an IV. Do be careful that you are receiving pure magnesium, as some practices infuse other ingredients into their formulas that may or may not be beneficial for you. This infusion method can quickly relieve chronic migraines, blood pressure issues and extreme anxiety and depression, among other major helps.
Foods High in Magnesium
There are many foods high in magnesium, though I would advise you to weigh them against your personal diet restrictions. In our family, we cannot have many of the foods I will list below because of other dietary limitations.
Foods high in magnesium include dark chocolate, yogurt, avocados, bananas, some mineral waters, leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, and fish.
Brands We Trust
There are a few brands we have come to trust over the last few years due to their apparent effectiveness. As a clean straightforward magnesium supplement, we prefer MagTech by Natural Stacks, easily obtained outside of a practitioner's issuing. For topical purposes to create skin products, we use Magnesium Flakes by Now Solutions.
Recipes
Below I will share 3 recipes that utilize the magnesium flakes. I hope you will endeavor to make each one as needed. They are delightful and truly helpful!
1. Magnesium Whipped Body Butter Lotion
2. Magnesium Body Spray/Deodorant
3. Easy Magnesium Bath Soak
Magnesium Whipped Body Butter Lotion

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup magnesium oil
- to make this oil add 3T of hot water to 1/2 cup of magnesium flakes
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup raw shea butter
- 2T of beeswax pellets
How to Make Magnesium Lotion
1. The night or day before, make your magnesium oil and allow it to soak until the flakes have fully dissolved (it can take quite a while, so allow time for this step).

2. In a double broiler set up, melt the raw shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax pellets on low heat.

3. Add the magnesium oil to your melted oils and stir
4. Optional: add in essential oils of lavender or frankincense at this stage (10-20 drops)
5. Cool to almost hard in the freezer or refrigerator

6. Using a stick blender or mixer, whip the almost hardened mixture to a whipped butter consistency. Be careful not to over blend.

7. Transfer your lotion to a clean mason jar or the like. Before testing your new lotion, please read our note below.

Note: Magnesium lotion can be really powerful to those who are sensitive and/or deficient, so test a pea-size amount on tougher parts of your skin, like your knees or elbows. It can have a slight burning sensation on overly dry or sensitive skin until your body gets used to it. Do not use on cuts or irritated skin.
Magnesium Body Spray/Deodorant

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup of magnesium oil
- to make this oil add 3T of hot water to 1/4 cup of magnesium flakes
- Optional: add essential oils as tolerated or desired
- Purified water to fill the remainder of your spray bottle
How to Make Magnesium Body Spray/Deodorant
1. The night or day before, make your oil mixture
2. Once your oil is fully dissolved, pour into a clean glass spray bottle
3. Add purified water to fill the remainder of the bottle
Shake well before spraying it on your skin. Use as deodorant to replace conventional heavy metals deodorant for a more effective, safer option.
Easy Magnesium Bath Soak
Soak a handful of magnesium flakes in a bowl of hot water a few hours prior to your bath. Add the magnesium solution to your bath water and soak for 15-20 minutes.
Some may find it strange, but we enjoy taking chamomile tea bags and adding them to a bath soak too!
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Or do you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
